Hi Everybody, We are in Altoona, Iowa for the first "Ridin' The Storm Out...Midwest Flood Relief Concert". I just got back from a helicopter ride with “Copter John”, the pilot/meteorologist for local Channel 8 TV. We hovered above some of the hardest hit local areas, surveying flood damage here in the Des Moines area first hand. This is but one of the many locations throughout the Midwest which were affected by the 2008 floods. I met with an awesome local business leader by the name of Barry Griswell this afternoon. He has initiated "Embrace Iowa", which raises funds to fill the gaps between the various government programs which are presently helping the people of Iowa. We are talking about plans for more concerts later in the summer. The view from the helicopter showed some of the frightening damage, but in general the flood waters have receded and the rivers and lakes are back within their banks. But the lives of the people whose homes have been destroyed and whose lives have been turned on end are just beginning the long process of getting back to normal. Many of them will be returning to their banks, in dire need of funding to repair their homes, farms, and businesses. But they will need additional help... It is our intention to accomplish three main goals with these flood relief concerts...to raise money for those in immediate need, to raise morale for those who are working so hard to put their lives back together, and to raise awareness around the country as to the problems people here are facing. I feel that the rest of America might learn from the spirit of the Midwest. We have been raised with a mentality which stresses hard work, commitment to family and community, and that when the work is done...have some fun. That spirit is a gift that those of us lucky enough to be born and raised here have been blessed with, and are always willing to share with our neighbors. We are far more than simply the fly-over states...we are the Midwest, and proud of it. KC P.S. The event in Iowa was a total success. The weather was perfect. The media coverage was huge. We had over 11,000 smiling people, at $20.00 each, plus the county government matched the ticket sales...which according to my calculations means that we raised well over $400,000. Thanks again to Prairie Meadows Casino, KGGO Radio, Ticketmaster, "Copter John" McGlaughlin and the Channel 8 news team, Tom Consolo and the REO management team, Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie, the always amazing REO Speedwagon crew, and to all the people of Iowa who came out to support this event. As I said, this is just the beginning. There is much more work to be done. Webmaster note: These pictures were sent in by John McLaughlin.
